Volunteer Opportunity: Branch Trustee – Retail Management

Are you an experienced retail professional with a passion for animal welfare? Join us as a Branch Trustee – Retail Management and play a vital role in shaping the future of our charity shops while helping animals in need.

Help Animals. Use Your Skills. Make a Difference.

We’re seeking a dedicated volunteer with retail expertise to join our Board of Trustees. This is a unique opportunity to support our mission, gain valuable experience, and help drive income generation through retail operations, enabling us to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome more animals across Oxfordshire.

What Does the Role Involve?

As our Retail Management Trustee, you’ll:

  • Support and advise the Branch Manager in maximising income from our three existing charity shops

  • Help identify opportunities for new retail outlets within the Oxfordshire area

  • Assist in the development of an e-commerce operation (e.g. eBay)

  • Ensure our shops meet all health and safety requirements

  • Explore innovative new income streams and put them into action

  • Collaborate with fellow trustees to help set and deliver strategic plans

You’ll also take part in regular monthly meetings (typically 1–2 hours) and may choose to get involved in additional projects or initiatives.

About the RSPCA and Our Oxfordshire Branch

The RSPCA has been at the forefront of animal welfare for over 200 years. Founded in 1824, it is the world’s oldest animal welfare charity. The Oxfordshire Branch – established in 1875 – is part of this proud tradition, operating as a separately registered charity focused on local animal welfare.

We work closely with the National RSPCA team and the public to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals suffering from cruelty or neglect. We also provide support for veterinary costs, neutering and microchipping to prevent future suffering.

Our small, dedicated team is led by an Operations Manager and supported by a network of passionate volunteers.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who brings:

  • Experience in retail operations or income generation

  • A commitment to our mission and values

  • Creativity, a fresh perspective, and a proactive mindset

  • The ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team

  • Common sense, objectivity and enthusiasm for making a real impact

We’re committed to building a diverse board and encourage applicants from all backgrounds, communities and identities to apply.

Core Responsibilities of a Branch Trustee

  • Support the aims and policies of the RSPCA

  • Work with fellow trustees to make strategic decisions

  • Ensure compliance with animal welfare standards (MAWS)

  • Help shape the Branch Development Plan

  • Attend monthly committee meetings, the AGM, and regional events

  • Actively promote the charity and recruit new volunteers

  • Oversee the governance of any staff or premises held by the Branch
