Poppy’s new owner gives us a fabulous update on our little heroine!
I recently adopted Poppy, a young Cockapoo, from RSPCA Oxfordshire. Poppy was a neglect case and, due to a lack of grooming, was affectionately nicknamed the “Yettipoo.” When I first met with the team at the branch, I explained that I was looking for a medium to large-sized dog, like a Labrador. At the time, however, Poppy was the only dog available.
Since I was really keen to adopt and the staff thought Poppy might be a great match, I decided to meet her while she was still in foster care. She was definitely smaller than I’d imagined and far hairier than I’d pictured, but she was also incredibly sweet. I could see how much she was blossoming every day in her foster home, and I felt she had great potential. I knew we could make a wonderful team.
When I brought her home, Poppy settled in quickly. She adapted to her new surroundings with ease and approached everything with enthusiasm. She’s incredibly sociable with people and other dogs, and it didn’t take long for her to develop a fan club. It’s hard to believe she hasn’t been with me forever.
Not only is Poppy full of personality, but she’s also incredibly smart and intuitive. Shortly after I adopted her, she proved just how clever she is. I’d put some bacon on to cook and popped upstairs for a moment. A short while later, Poppy came running up to me, growling and barking in a way I’d never heard before. It wasn’t her usual bark to alert me to someone at the door—this was urgent and insistent. I hurried downstairs to find smoke rising from the stove—the bacon was burning! Thanks to Poppy’s warning, I was able to save the situation before it got worse.
Every day, Poppy amazes me with new facets to her personality. She’s the best company I could have hoped for and is proof that the dog you didn’t expect might just be the perfect fit.
