My second foster for RSPCA Oxfordshire was Marley, an elderly Staffie who had come into care after suffering terrible neglect. When he arrived, Marley was in a pitiful state—skin and bones, weighing just 9kg. It was heartbreaking to see a dog so neglected, yet his gentle nature and loving personality still shone through.
Marley required feeding small meals every few hours to help him safely regain his strength. He loved his food and eagerly awaited each meal, wagging his tail in anticipation. Over time, Marley steadily gained weight, eventually reaching a healthy 23kg. Once he resumed eating just two meals a day, he made it clear he wasn’t too impressed with the new routine—he would have happily eaten all day if given the chance!
Despite the neglect he had endured, Marley remained incredibly loving, friendly, and easygoing. He quickly became a cherished part of our household, making friends with everyone he met. It was hard to fathom how anyone could mistreat such a sweet and gentle soul.
Once Marley was healthy and strong, it was time to begin the search for his forever home. As it turned out, we didn’t have to look very far. A lovely lady who had come to meet Spot, my previous foster, had expressed her desire to adopt an older dog. Even before meeting Marley, she felt a connection and knew she wanted to give him a home.
To ensure Marley was ready, I waited until he had fully recovered before arranging their first meeting. When they finally met in person, the connection was instant. Marley, with his calm and loving demeanour, won her heart immediately, and it was clear she would provide him with the life he deserved. Off he went to his new home, where he is now treasured and adored.
People often ask me how I can bear to part with the dogs I foster. The truth is, it’s never easy. We love each foster as if they were our own. But it’s also an incredible privilege to help prepare them for the next chapter of their lives. I’m constantly amazed by the incredible people who come forward to adopt. Often, it seems like the dog and their new family need each other equally.
When I say goodbye to a foster dog, I do so knowing they’re heading to an exceptional home where they’ll be loved and cherished. Marley’s story is a reminder of the resilience of animals and the life-changing impact fostering can have—for the dogs and their new families alike.
