Itty and Her Kittens: A Foster Tail

My husband and I have been foster carers for RSPCA Oxfordshire since June 2024, and in that time, we’ve had the privilege of fostering 28 cats and kittens. Each one has left its paw print on our hearts, and our latest addition, Itty, was no exception.

Itty came to us in October 2024, and from the very beginning, she was the most chilled, loving cat we’d ever met. She quickly stole our hearts, often curling up beside me at night and gently placing her paw on my cheek as if to say, “Thank you.”

A vet check soon confirmed that Itty was pregnant, and we eagerly awaited the big event. On 4th November 2024, after a long and watchful night, Itty gave birth to three beautiful kittens: Otto, Dotty, and Dory. Watching her transform into a devoted, dutiful mother was an absolute privilege. She cared for her kittens with such tenderness, and we were completely mesmerised by the tiny squeaking bundles nursing and snuggling beside her.

All too quickly, the kittens began to grow, turning into little balls of energy and mischief. They filled our home with endless joy, chasing each other, climbing (and scratching!) our legs, and delighting us with their playful antics. Their little faces would light up the moment we entered the room, and the happiness they brought into our lives was truly indescribable.

As foster carers, we know the bittersweet moment when it’s time for the kittens to leave for their forever homes. While our hearts are filled with excitement for them, knowing they’ll have wonderful lives ahead, the house feels so quiet once they’re gone. But there’s always room for the next batch of joy!

Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience. Providing care and a safe environment for animals that haven’t had the best start in life, and then seeing them thrive in new homes, gives us a deep sense of fulfilment. Every cat and kitten we’ve fostered has responded positively to the love and care we provide, and they return it tenfold through their affection and playful spirits.

Our home is filled with energy, unconditional love, and the pitter-patter of tiny paws—and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
