The RSPCA is facing an unprecedented number of cats in need of homes this autumn – and our Oxfordshire branch is no exception.
Across England and Wales, RSPCA centres and branches are currently caring for record numbers of cats, as part of what’s being described as an “unprecedented rehoming crisis.” New figures released during the charity’s annual Adoptober campaign reveal that cats are now spending 40 days on average in care before finding new homes – a rise of 23% compared to last year.
While the RSPCA rehomes more cats than any other animal – over 17,000 last year, or around two every single hour – the demand for space continues to rise, fuelled by large-scale cruelty and neglect cases.
With centres across the country full, many cats are being cared for by fosterers or temporarily placed in private catteries until room becomes available.
“We have an astonishing number of cats in our care who are looking for new homes,” said Alice Potter, RSPCA Cat Welfare Specialist. “Our teams are doing everything they can, but finding loving homes for these cats quickly is vital so that we can make space for others in need.”
Meet Rosie – one of Oxfordshire’s waiting cats
Among the cats waiting for a second chance is Rosie, a gentle nine-year-old black-and-white cat who has been with RSPCA Oxfordshire for more than a year.
Rosie is a sweet, affectionate companion who adores sunshine, soft laps, and gentle playtime. She’s been through a lot and has ongoing back and hip problems which mean she’ll need pain relief for life – but she still has so much love to give.
She’s looking for a quiet, adult-only home with no other pets, where she can take things at her own pace and enjoy a calm, comfortable life.
“Rosie is such a lovely girl, but sadly she’s been looking for a forever home for more than a year,” said Sharon Chrisp, Operations Manager at RSPCA Oxfordshire. “She really deserves a kind, loving owner who can give her the care and comfort she needs. We’d be happy to talk everything through with potential adopters – she truly has so much love to give.”
Her foster carer, Anna Kennington, added:
“Rosie is a sweet, affectionate cat who loves human company. She enjoys exploring the garden, sunbathing, and playing with wand toys. She’s gentle and fits easily into day-to-day life. She loves to sit on your lap whenever she can – she’s the perfect companion.”
How you can help
This Adoptober, the RSPCA is encouraging people to consider adopting or fostering a rescue cat. Even offering a temporary foster home can make a huge difference, freeing up space for other animals in urgent need.
